Job Search
Should you apply if you do not meet every qualification?
A clearer framework for deciding when a stretch opportunity is worth pursuing—and when it probably is not.
Separate requirements from preferences
Some qualifications are essential to perform the job or meet a legal requirement. Others describe an ideal candidate. Read the responsibilities, not only the checklist, and identify which gaps would genuinely prevent you from doing the work.
Look for transferable evidence
You may have demonstrated the underlying skill in a different setting. Coursework, projects, internships, part-time work, volunteering, and leadership can all show relevant evidence when translated clearly.
Consider the size of the gap
A small gap in years of experience may be reasonable. Missing a required license, work authorization, or central technical capability is different. Use judgment rather than a fixed percentage rule.
Make the application specific
If you apply, align your resume with the role’s real priorities. Show the closest evidence you have, address the work directly, and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to every gap.
